Viable and DeafNation Expo cheated deaf community with "junk" VPADs last year

If you think Viable can run away from the FBI investigation and play innoncent, that's not going to happen. They will fall into a trap of new findings very soon.

Read this:

Do you remember...

...Viable’s new VPADs released at DeafNation Expo in April and May of 2008?

...The advertisement on DeafNation Expo's website: "Buy VPAD for $99 at Deaf Nation Expo! If you're not happy with it, we'll give you a full refund."?

...Many, many deaf customers were not happy with their defective VPADs?

I have been an employee at Viable for three years. Because of my confidentiality contract with Viable, I couldn’t discuss issues with anyone other than Viable staff. I am very disgusted at both Viable, Inc. and DeafNation, Inc. for misleading and cheating deaf buyers last year. I prefer to release this post and remain anonymous from any possible lawsuits until the process of Class Action against Viable and DeafNation is done.

Viable VPAD is a 10.2-inch touch screen, an USB port, audio/visual ports, and allows for one-click connection to ViableVRS. The VPAD is the first WiFi-enabled and portable videophone to be developed for VRS users. See VPAD demo - http://www.viable.net/product/vpad.

John Yeh was fully aware that the all VPADs were already flawed and defective before they were sold at DeafNation Expo last year. The touch screen was not correctly functioned.

When a new, upgraded device VPAD+ (VPAD Plus) successfully functioned, John Yeh had no money to manufacture VPAD+. He was worried and had to fire some of his employees and figure out with many, many “junk” VPADs in stock.

In late December 2007 Viable Founder John Yeh and two Viable executives urgently invited DeafNation co-founders Joel Barish and Jed Barish to the confidential meeting near the 2008 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, in January of 2008.

John Yeh and Joel Barish are well-bonded fraternity brothers and former business partners of WebbyNation, Inc. Their partnership information can be found at http://www.jdcc.org/site/2001/nov-dec/business.htm.

After hours of private deliberation in John Yeh's hotel suite room, John Yeh couldn’t say no to Joel Barish’s dreadful offer to sell "Junk" VPADs at DeafNation Expo in April and May of 2008.
DeafNation intentionally contracted an undisclosed arrangement with Viable, Inc. to get rid of all "junk" VPADs at DeafNation Expo in April and May of 2008, to mention hidden charges at DeafNation Expo and to earn big commission per VPAD sold.

DeafNation intentionally agreed with Viable, Inc. to put "Buy VPAD for $99 at Deaf Nation Expo! If you're not happy with it, we'll give you a full refund" advertisement on DeafNation Expo's website and to take it down after 30 days.

Viable intentionally agreed to change their refund policy after VPADs were purchased.

Thousand “junk” VPADs were sold out at DeafNation Expo: Pomona, California, on April 12, Omaha, Nebraska., on April 19; Columbus, Ohio, on April 26; and Atlanta on May 3.

That was only 22 days...That was LESS than a month!

DeafNation Expo took down the "Buy VPAD for $99 at Deaf Nation Expo! If you're not happy with it, we'll give you a full refund" advertisement from the website and advised all customers that VPAD were sold and non-refundable.

Many, many victims grew anger and lost a lot of money on VPADs. Not many of them can afford to hire an attorney to handle this fraud case. It’s very sad that several “dirty” VRS companies and DeafNation Expo made millions of dollars out of the deaf community.

Viable thanked DeafNation for all the dirty efforts and wrote them checks in the amount of $425,000 for commission.

Last June I bumped Joel Barish at Puerto Rico DeafNation Expo. He chuckled and winked. My emotion crumbled into widespread disgust.

SHAME on Joel Barish!
SHAME on Jed Barish!
SHAME on John Yeh!
SHAME on DeafNation Expo!
SHAME on Viable, Inc.!

  1. I applaud you for taking the courage to come out with this information. It is very unfortunate that they would profit from innocent people like us. Thank you for waking us up!

  2. If Viable sold 5,000 VPADs and DeafNation received $425,000, that is 86% commission, highly unbelievable to be true, do you have firm numbers and facts other than a pay out amount that has no reference of where it came from?

  3. I just got laid off from Viable and they do dirty business.

  4. Another Viable ex-employee here.
In Pomona, CA, we never issued the receipts to the customers. We just took their money. Many people asked for the receipts. Anthony Mowl said that we would mail it out, which we know is not true. I was one of the few employees who disagreed to issue the VPADs without the receipts.

To this day, I can still remember what he said about it. "I am the fucking boss. Fuck those people! The people don't need to know, just sell it and take their SSI money. Just do it, don't forget I am the boss." After the show, he laughed and said, "See, many suckers out there." He mocked those people who were clueless and tried to get help from us. During all four shows, you can remember Viable got two "tower" with four VPADs around each of it. Four out of eight VPADs were unable to make a call out. Anthony instructed us to blame on the conference center's system which it was not true. The VPADs didn't work at all. Somehow we made it through those four shows. And still to this day, I still can't believe we fooled many customers.

I bet anyone who did buy VPAD in Pomona, CA can verify it. For all of the four shows, if you can recall, Viable gave away 4-5 VPADs. We had to registered through VPAD, All calls were en route to Texas, same office as MASCOM. Guess what, the four lines were on the lines and never hung up, it was on the whole day. We never actually did any raffle. Anthony said it was all electronic. Again, that was not true. Anthony made the decision and selected those people who he liked. Everything was lie and many customers were fooled by Viable. I must admit when I did those things, I was very sick in my stomach. My feelings sunk...

I want to add someone to the Hall of Shame. His name is Anthony Mowl. Shame on you, Anthony Mowl!

  5. At least 12,000 bad VPADS were sold last year. 50% went to Joel's pocket.

  24. Myself happy with VPAD but never use their service as VRS. I use the device as Sorenson. Again, when I learn that news, I am little worry about my information that they hold account of our information due the FBI and other reason.

It disappoint to see that USA role with VRS reflection to other counrties with their own VRS but now they look at us and now want same mistake as we are face right now.

  25. Thanks for posting this info. What disgust!

deafnation.com site is out of order at this time. I knew something fishy about these companies a while. This news is no surprise. It is about a time to put Barish/Yeh bad boys' asses on fire.

Hope you will find another job ASAP!

Obviously, you are just another deaf leftist. Deaf owners cannot be trusted. Needless to say, your comments are always ridiculous and dumb. Your statements are usually based on unreliable source. People know you. It is nothing wrong being anonymous. You are not charge on this blog. You are just another troll on the Internet. You are nobody but on offensive mode for Viable, Inc. How sad.

And at least, I always identify who I am. Can you? Quit hiding behind the monitor attacking people using "anonymous". It is so unattractive.

"You are not charge on this blog."??? Go back to school, pal.

Each time you spewed your fantastical comments, it is hilarious.

You know what divided me from you? I don't hide, you hide. Who's a coward after all?

And by the way, I'm not even in 40ish. LOL.

Get a fucking life. DVTV and DeafRead are dying as I predicted all along. Just look at "hits" -- get a drift, yet? Guess not. That's why you folks are stupid.

  33. Ridor,

Have you indeed contacted the "right" people? I think you ought share that with us all then we will believe you. Just say it on your youtube. Simple, isn't it?

Otherwise, You are moron and untrustworthy dude.

Viable Inc is dying as we all predicted.

Your reputation is pretty much damaged. Just like Viable, inc.

I don't care if you aren't 40ish. But you surely look damn like one. You absolutely need go to gym more often.

PS: Can you please quit attacking on people. It's pretty pointless.

  41. Anonymous, anonymous, anonymous. That's all you guys can do. Hide behind the monitor attacking folks who would take a stand.

First of all, I simply stated that VPAD works for me.

You can accuse, slander and fabricate things about me. It is hysterical to see such lies manufactured out of your dreams.

Me a pervert just because I saw children playing in the backyard? Please don't delude yourself.

Folks, folks. Go ahead and talk amongst each other -- that's all you can do. Hide behind "anonymous" commentators if it makes you feel much better.

That's all you can do these days. Pathetic.

If I'm moron and untrustworthy dude, then do tell me why my vlogs/blogs continue to gather hundreds of hits in comparison with the ones on DVTV and DR? I rest my case.

Dream on, folks. That's all you can do these days.

  49. My VPAD (first edition, not Plus) works fine. I have one at work and two at home. All are the same. Early VPAD software needed you to plug in a mouse to calibrate the display. Viable's mistake was not documenting it. After that, it was fine. It is like the focus on the old fashioned TV where you twist the knob to get just the right picture. Later upgrades made it better so no mouse was needed and you can calibrate with your finger, but better to use your fingernail for fine tuning.

No technology is perfect. Look at Windows Vista! That is from an old company that should know better. Viable is a young company. Of course they will make mistakes.

VPAD still beats MVP. Purple knows it and that is why they downplay it now. At least you can get a VPAD easily and it does work very well. Not so the MVP. Even VP200 is not given to everyone. But anyone can get a VPAD.

A certain percentage of LCD panels and touch screens are always defective. That is the nature of the technology. This includes monitors, TVs, etc. You need to return it right away and get it replaced. Otherwise, the seller has no way of knowing if you simply broke it due to misuse or abuse.

Most people at Viable are good people. Just a few people were not. Most are innocent and do their best.

The original poster should have come forward before if he had a problem. As it is, all I see is a disgruntled ex-employee.

As for some Barish-Yeh collusion: neither one of them is that bright, just like 85% of the posters here.

    Get a life, people.

    ReplyDelete
  50. From a deaf anonymous source, I must commend that someone was brave to spill the beans BEFORE anymore deaf people buy this defective products! There is an idea if this might help you--- why don't you remove your names, email addresses and not to look at the DeafNation website AGAIN and NOT to go to anymore of their expos!
Better NOT to show your face, flying hands and bodies at their expos again!!! NO FACE THERE!
The vendors will hopefully get the full idea of why not many deaf people are at the DeafNation Expo ONLY IF YOU DO NOT SHOW UP THERE!
I know that many deaf people love to meet and see friends but, it is not worth your time!!!

  51. Ridor wrote: "First of all, I simply that VPAD works for me."

His actual words were: "By the way, I have VPAD for more than a year. It works just great. I use it everyday.

Obviously, you folks are dumb than a doorknob."

This means that Ridor thinks all VPADs were functional, and people with non-functional VPADS were "dumb as a doorknob" because they couldn't get it to work.

    See how Ridor twists things?

I've seen Ridor criticize others' English. He can't write English either.

    "I have VPAD" = "I have had a VPAD"

"...you folks are dumb than a doorknob." = "...you folks are dumber than a doorknob."

  52. All ex-Viable employees and Yeh-haters (crab-mentality deaf stabbers) just used this blogs to combat against Viable. That is all what they wanted to do. Not true evidences! FAKE RUMORS! Talking is CHEAP!

You, all don't know how to READ the LEGAL issues. ;-) Just talk and talk whining and whining. What a waste!

Viable VPAD is still the BEST technology and their hard-working effects will push through a time.

Without Viable VPAD. HOVRS will never get MVP or any VRS improvement. We should THANK to VIABLE!

John Yeh is not a crook! He is very generous and want to see many deaf businesses to grow! I know him very well. Even he gives charities to deaf communities. Other VRS providers do???? NO WAY!

    Stop whining!! Face the REALITY!

You all DEAF CULTS! Don't understand other sides or outside the deaf world!

Shut up! Move on with your life!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Hey Deaf Cults! again!

You called as Deaf Cults! or Leftists. No brain! Just complain and complain. No good reasons!!!

You look for negative or flaws to bring it up here. To stab and stab..

Or you want money for yourself! Don't care about improvement and technology in the future. No values. DOGS EAT DOGS. DEAF EATS DEAF.

Viable is still THE BEST! We stand for them FOREVER - why? They are only ONE DEAF-OWNED VRS with tech development. We can't afford to lose its endangered species - an unique business and impact to the Deaf community. Think about it.

    You all, LOSERS! forever.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Hey, hey! Let's cool it- it's sad to see this kind of behavior in the Deaf Community. As Michael Chorost wrote in his book, "Rebuilt", the Deaf community is one of the very few remaining communities left in America and he was envious of this. Let's all pull together and support each other.

You need to understand that John Yeh is a hard working gentleman who has succeeded very well in putting together two respectable companies (if not more). How many of you would be able to say that you helped to build a company that had 600 employees at its peak and then sold it and then going on to open the first Deaf-owned VRS company? He had the V-Pad designed for YOU- and worked very hard to produce a specifically designed VP for Deaf people- the first since the Sorenson products, which are is developed by hearing people.

Let's celebrate John's and many other successful people's success rather than pulling them down to the bottom of the crab pot. If we keep pulling folks down- then there will be NO Deaf Community left- how about it??

  55. Viable does some shady business in the past. One person got a job offer at Viable two years ago. He filled out the forms before he began the work. But then he never heard any news from Viable. He contacted the company on follow up but Viable never bothered to call back. If you still doubt, have a chat with Viable manager's last name House. They just robbed people's privacy info.

  56. We able to ask Viable first to replace a newer version of VAD+ or full refund. If not, we can able to class action suit against Viable. It is only way Viable must avoid the class action suit to replace a newer version of VAD+ or full refund. What do you think?

  65. I had VPAD for almost two years. It is great to have it - 99 dollars = worth it. I am very sorry that Viable has to go through this.. I pray that Viable Inc and employees are going to be strong and stand up through all of this crab theory stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Wow, Average paying probably is about 5,000 dollars.

    5,000 dollars x 250 (employees) = $1,250,000 per 2 weeks.

It looks like Viable didn't pay their employees for more than 4 weeks now. Soon, it will be 6 weeks.

  67. Ridor, "have had" can mean you still own it. I wonder how you graduated from Journalism -- you can't write worth crap.

You're trying to discredit this thread by citing "deaf leaders". That's a old tactic of yours. We don't buy it. You're a liar.

If you were sure this thread couldn't be relied upon, why did you bother checking with your "friends"? By the way, you have no friends. You think you do, but they backstab you all the time and laugh about it. People are nice to you only because they're afraid of what you will say about them. They're false friends and will desert you faster than you can blink.

  74. It is not very often I comment on something like this. A friend of mine acquired a VPAD directly from Viable. From what I understood, it was in beta testing at that time which could explain the bargain-basement price. I know they cost much more to build.

We initially had problems with it but all the problems went away after the software was updated about six months ago. It now runs very well and my friend constantly uses it. I use it all the time whenever I come and visit.

Disclaimer: I do not work for Viable and have never worked for Viable. I have personally met both John Yeh and Jason Yeh. Jason was able to provide detailed answers to all of my technical questions.

  77. Hey Folks!

First of all, this is a blog spot not a place for personal bashing. Take it elsewhere.

Secondly, The employees who where were laid off from Viable are not at fault here. It's the upper management to blame for this mess. They obviously saw this, new about it and did nothing.

Those former employees and Interps are waiting to get paid. If any of you know of a class action suit being filed by them, why not post it here so we all can see what's happening? Maybe there are some employees here who are anonymous and would benefit from this information. We as a community should be helping each other not bashing and slinging mud at each other.

Overall, I saw the article and I'm skeptical because I have VPAD and VPAD+ and both work beautifully so I kind of find it hard to believe that they sold junk. I know several people who have Viable product and aren't complaining. Some have already posted blogs about it on youtube about how wonderful this is.

The article would be more credible if the person came forward and identified themselves. Otherwise this is all speculation.

Final note, be careful what you say here. Your IP address is recorded when you post a comment. If, I mean IF, Viable comes out of this mess...innocent, they can get a court order for this website to file charges of either slander or defamation suits against anyone here who posted comments that they feel is defamatory or slander. Keep that in mind.

    ReplyDelete
  78. IP address... who cares. I dont see any defamatory here. This blog is a room to vent their frustrations. We are not afraid because I believe most comments in here are true. Thank you for trying to scare us.

Due to the nature of my employment, I must withhold my name in whole.

As a current employee at Viable, Inc., the challenges presented in front of us all, the employees of Viable, Inc., are so trying and tough. By no means, it's a simple challenge that we could shoulder with no burden. Burden is real and it is a tough time for every employee.

However, I shall state one and only one fact. We are still serving our customers. Our VRS are still operating as usual. Employees here at Viable, Inc. really do want to see that we can provide a top-notch service to our customers even during this difficult time. We

ViableVRS is still open 24/7 and can be reached through by dialing ViableVRS.tv

  84. WOW, ad hominem is in the air, we are in need of an empirical approach to the situation. If 100% of what was said in the blog post is true, there are clearly lack of ethics that are present in Viable' business practices..

BUT how do we know if the author is right, 100%? The information could be easily a lie. I'm not saying it is, but it is pretty convenient for a lie to surface on the internet, especially from a so called ex-employee.

I'm not on anyone side. I dont even use VPs as I prefer emailing and other methods of communication.. (debatable, i know)

My 2 cents to the anonymous author of the post-

    1. Create a bulletproof argument by using facts/evidence people can believe in. Examples: Testimonials from customers, comments from ex-employees, diagnostic information on the defective products, sources to your so-called facts, and etc etc etc

Your words/experience are not enough, especially when its an anonymous blog post. No argument is 100% immune to rebuttal bullets but a quarter-inch of bamboo is guarding your arguments right now. Make it stronger.

    2. Use the power of the numbers- Seek statistical information on your claims.. Maybe when you worked there you should have stole some documents from Viable, information that would make your whistle-blowing a lot more potent.

The $425k compensation you were talking about is being thrown around as either faulty logic or absolute truth.. If you had proof of such commission, people would respect the fact more. Right now some people think you pulled the number out of a specific orifice of yours.

Viable could be either Enron or Johnson and Johnson. I dont know. But I do know this article does not in any way prove that Viable is either one.

If anyone uses this article as a mandate to argue against Viable's practices, they are doing it wrong. There is clearly lack of evidence here and we should seek to other collections of text to promote our arguments..

OK, Im done. And people, use more agreeable euphemisms to make your point. Its always more effective that way.

Again, take your best shot at me. I shall prevail. At least, I do not resort to insults like you do hiding behind the monitor. At least, I beat you with *facts*. Can you do the same thing about Viable without resorting to the personal attacks, eh?

    Oh, you can't.

I got two vpads at deafexpo in Omaha in 2008 brought them home I ORDERED TWO WIFI ADAPTERS the vpad's did not work I instant message viablehelp and was told they do not make refunds so I sent a formal complaint to the FCC. I got a reply back from Viable that they would trade my two worthless vpads for two vpad+ and come to my home and set them up for me. It took from April to October for service rep to com to my home. They work, not great, but better than nothing. Needs better internet browser The service rep took my wifi adapters and said I would get refund. It took another 9 months to get refund for the wifi adapters.I gave the service rep the names, phone numbers and email address of about 20 other people from this area who have problem with vpad and they were never contacted by Viable.

  89. Sad indeed.

FACT: Viable employees are always paid two weeks behind, meaning you are always "owed" two weeks pay, which Viable would be obligated to settle when you leave the company.

FACT: Viable MISSED payroll entirely on July 17th. Viable has not made payroll for any employee since this time. Therefore, at a minimum, employees who were immediately laid off were owed four weeks pay; two current and the two prior since again they pay two weeks delayed.

FACT: Viable is being investigated by the FBI and FCC for billing for fradulent minutes. This is well documented in the complaints that are public information.

I will agree, the initial VPAD release was NOT the quality product that the VPAD+ product has become. There were issues, which is not uncommon with new technology releases. But the new product, the VPAD+, is actually a very nice product, and fairly reliable. Keep in mind....the quality you personally experience is mostly dependant on your internet service. If you are running your VPAD+ while simultaneously running a computer (or more than one) you WILL experience quality issues.

The quality of the product does not excuse the fraud, which is the real issue here, and not the VPAD itself.

Yes, the ethics of the company are severely in question, and I see it difficult for the company to survive. However, I see an opportunity for someone else to potentially buy the company and emerge a new company with new management to continue to support the community as is clearly needed, and to continue to develop the VPAD+ and evolve to even greater things.

For those responsible....I do hear that Bernie Madoff is looking for a good cell mate.

To all former employees....see if you can join the lawsuit in Maryland. For those current....good luck in weathering the storm.

  90. From what I read in Anonymous' "loud remark" post about the wonderful companies, "DeafNation" and "Viable, Inc.", I feel devastated because of all the hard work they have done for the deaf community! I believe that they are providing the best quality products to their customers and met their needs. It is impossible for them not to meet their customers' needs because they cherish good customer service in order to keep their business in the market. In order for them to provide service to whatever their customers need, I am sure that John Yeh returned the defective VPADs to the manufacturer and either replace their VPADs or give full refunds. If they sell defective VPADs at DeafNation Expo, then they wouldn't buy them for sure! Use your common sense, Anonymous! Please do not let anyone believe what Anonymous says about Viable, Inc. and DeafNation. They deserve respect and honor for their hard work. Thank you!

I have good news! - these other 6 commenters including myself overthrew Anonymous with positive remarks about Viable, Inc. and DeafNation! Anonymous is the only one in the ring, ha yo yo! It is the evidence that they provided excellent service to their customers!

Human Recourse agreed to hired this lady because Human Resource was also in the same sorority. My friend has some experiences on technology and able help customers whose need a help. So this company is making a lot of money illegally!

  103. That would definitely be in violation of FCC regulations- I hope noone is taking pictures of any call centers while I am making a VRS call. My suggestion is if you care about Viable and want to know if they are still open, just make a call through Viable VRS.

  104. I don't intend to encourage people to take a picture of interpreter at duty or inside the building. But take picture of outside building should be OK to see workers go in and out. 117. Hello Everyone-

I would like to start off by leaving my name out of the picture because Viable would do anything to destroy anyone's credibility even my own.
I want to tell my story to every one of you out there. Viable has no interest in Deaf Communities. Otherwise, they would have budget their funds carefully to ensure business' longevity to support Deaf and HOH Consumers' needs. They would have taken an extra measure and steps to take care of its employees, interpreters in case this happens during hard time. Any good company will always prepare itself for the worse case scenarios. Instead, all the executives and management pocket all the money we contributed to them by using their services. Yes, it is true, VPads are being sold to Canadians, and Yes, Canadians callers calls in and Viable billed the minutes to NECA, That means, our taxes are being shelled out for the foreigners' calls. No offense, Canucks are my friends, but hey, I got families and relatives even friends that pay their taxes in the U.S. I would hate to see them using our tax money. We are in a bad shape as a whole Nation.
They've really outdone themselves by not meeting its payroll and paying its executives on priorities rather than the Interpreters or Reps, or rest of the employees, to maintain their lavish lifestyles. Viable has really screwed up its priorities during its beginning of an infancy. Their foundations are being crumbled as we speak. They hire amateurs to become an executives without MBA degrees but on a sheer of favoritism of Kappa Gamma Fraternity. Sometimes in this life, everything can not be run by the same group, you must hire real men to take care of business in this real world. Pansies always fold under duress.
They don't really care about consumers' needs or to provide service for us. I would suggest to use other providers with stability and more established company to ensure reliable quality services. Their interpreters are dwindling in numbers so are their employees, call centers and the offices. I foresee the end of Viable's run by end of October.

As for Class Action for Loss Wage-
I have collected all the information for every former and current employees out there to contact Maryland's State Attorney Office.
    State Attorney Office
    50 Maryland Ave. 5th Floor
    Rockville, M.D. 20850 (240)777-7300
The State Attorney Office encourage us to type a letter, to have the State Attorney add ourselves as a Witness reference to the Case # 4D00222961 and to have the letter notarized and dated and sent to their office with explanation of the Unpaid Wage in as much detailed information as possible. Including your name, address, contact method. They will contact every one of the witness and have every witness added to Mary Moylan's case against John T.C. Yeh. This will suppress any defense John Yeh may imply upon against Mary Moylan, the more, the stronger our offense will be against John Yeh. The more witness comes forward in this case, the better chance we have in getting our money back, if he doesn't show up on Sept. 1st 2009 at the pre-trial, Warrants will be issued for John's arrest. I also encourage every former and current employees to file an Unpaid Wage with your local labor law office, before John Yeh uses up all the funds into his personal assets and bankrupt the business.
The local Rockville Gazette Newspaper wants more information from every one of you pertaining to Unpaid Wages. They want to run the story on this.
There will be a boycott at one of the Call Center with local news interviewing the interpreters and employees, Current and Former, against Viable. I will break the story as they come out. I do not want to state the date and time and place, in fear of no show during the business hours.
John has to show up at court shown below-
    District Court-Montgomery County-Criminal
    27 Courthouse Square
    Rockville, M.D. 20850-2398 (301) 279-1565

I hope this helps for the Current and Former employees out there.

  120. As I had been seen Viable employees who are most Caucasians and other nationalities than Asians in Headquarter and outside of it loathing Asian foods and not interested with Asian Deaf people. I believe they just work for earning for their living on $$$$. They take off their path from their concern on what/who Yeh is. Obviously, it is that they want house, fancy foods, fancy furnture, and cars - not thinking of who/what John Yeh is. My guess is that he may be neutral or blind what they ignore him. Also, most of them are young who work in HQ, even upper managements are young, too, of course, they still made their mistakes. I expect they have to learn their lesson of the past in their near future.

To Viable staff: Please respect the customers which are the first PRIORITY. If customers want refund from un-wanting VPAD, just neglect/deal with them. Be cooperated very good.

    Well, good luck to Viable.

  121. William Albright-

People wouldn't want to reveal their names in fear of lawsuit for defamation even though it is a true statement.

I can tell you that most of them are true! It is sad, but it is true! They are not disgruntled employees, they are trying to bring out the truth so stop accusing them of lies. They are trying to help everyone to wake up and realize the seriousness of what Viable has been doing behind the curtain! Viable is like Enron and Bernie Madoff! Don't shoot the messenger, shoot Viable!

I can't tell you or other people to believe it or not. I have been inside Viable's sphere and it is very unfortunate that they practice this kind of business. Power and Greed can corrupt one's mind, soul and twist their morals inside-out. Money is an evil of all evil.

Viable will go down hard, I can guarantee you this. Viable is not going to last much longer.

I am going to let FBI do their job. They know what's going on.

If Kim Hawkins went to jail for the things she did. John Yeh should be in jail as well because he has allowed his company do such thing. Viable and John Yeh are practicing a double standards and are the most hypocrite of all. Their attorneys quit because they know Viable is going down hard! Department of Justice has all the information and I have the inside source! Juicy Stuff!

Viable, it is too late to try to conceal everything because it is wide open for public to see. No matter how hard Viable try to dodge. They can dodge all they want but at the end, it is gonna be a hit.

At first, I thought Viable was doing a great service, but at the end, they're doing a great disservice for Deaf and HOH Communities, Sad!

    ReplyDelete
  124. I can't tell you for a fact about DeafNation's incident. I can tell you for a fact for the most of the comments that are true.

I would believe some money was shelled out to the Barish Brothers but for how much, I do not know. We may never know. I think FBI and IRS should take interest in this situation. They may have commit fraud with Viable and with other vendors in the past. It is Deaf and HOH's best interest to put this out in the open.

The purpose for this to give Deaf and HOH more awareness about the service they use. I strongly encourage everyone not to use ViableVRS because they are not paying their Interpreters, Employees, and Insurance Carriers. Still to this day as we speak. Viable is just stringing the Interpreters along into thinking that the Paycheck is coming.

Desperate time calls for desperate measure.

Viable Interpreters are really desperate and Viable is taking advantage of them. Most of them are very young, or really think that they are doing themselves a great service for the Deaf and HOH communities by keep going to work and hoping for the best and get paid. I can guarantee you that Viable can't meet its payroll that exceeds 2 million dollars to this day.

Viable has the most wicked forked-tongue that has the capability of putting some of the interpreters into trance and become gullible enough to keep coming to work without getting paid for a month now. Interpreters who are smart enough will see that they are just stringing them along with a false hope.

  125. Obviously, some of you posters are in favor of other VRS companies. That is fine. Look at some obvious facts.

Fact: the FBI affidavits and raids were aimed at Viable business partners. These are other companies. Viable was searched so the FBI could get call data from their servers. Nobody at Viable was arrested. And these partner companies were run by hearing people. They got greedy and that ended up hurting Viable.

Fact: They may have made marketing mistakes, but the VPAD itself is a good product and holds up well against all the other videophones. If you have used a VPAD you know this. Your Toyota Corolla can break down. Does that mean the Corolla is a bad car or that Toyota is a bad company? No.

Fact: plenty of good people work at Viable. If there was mismanagement, that does not make them bad people. Many of those people are Deaf. Stabbing them in the back here does not help the Deaf Community.

Viable is still operating. This is proof of their strength. They are doing the smart thing by restructuring and changing their management practices.

I am not employed by Viable and have never been. I am just putting in common sense observations.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Common Sense Observations?? Think you have missed a few things. You missed that VI 1 in the warrant came from Rockville. VI 1 worked in Rockville from Oct 06 to Spring of 07 and was doing those kind of calls that were fraud. The partnership that Viable made with Fla and Texas was a PARTNERSHIP. Meaning, Administration in Viable met these people and decided to form a partnership. They must of felt confident in doing business with these "hearing" people. AND, where was Viable's general counsel? Why didn't general counsel advise administration that things were not right? PEOPLE in this company KNEW what was going on, common sense observations will show that! And now interpreters are suffering without pay , people are starving and not knowing how to feed their families and you want to support a company that does that ! SHAME ON YOU TOO~!

  127. I don't work for Viable.

I don't think John Yeh is the crook many are portraying him as. In fact, I can attest that if it weren't for him, many of Viable's current employees would probably be unemployed, on SSI and/or just bumming around. Wherever John Yeh saw an opportunity to give a job to a deaf person, he gladly did it. That, in itself, tells me a lot about John Yeh's personality.

I do however believe that there are a few bad seeds at Viable and that it is them who are responsible for this entire mess. John Yeh's job should be to identify these bad seeds, cut them out of the company and replace them with more experienced staff. What I find hard to believe is that nearly every person in upper management position at Viable are fresh-out-of-college graduates. How do you expect them to make executive decisions that are in the best interest of the company? MBAs exist for a purpose, you know.

So, get rid of these inexperienced people or re-assign them in other positions that are more in line with their skills, and appoint more experienced people in these top positions. People with *real* management skills. People with *real* financial skills. People with *real* HR skills.

Only then, will Viable have a chance to weather the current crisis.

Hats off to John Yeh for his geniune ambitions!

    .x.

  128. Look up Maryland Courts and do a case search. Put in the name of both owners of Viable. John and Joseph Yeh. You will see that the Yeh brothers are not strangers to the court system. They know how to go thru the court system and they know how to make it drag out for years and years and years. They are not dumb men and they have a history in court. Good luck to everyone who will try to get their pay from them. I call them the Chinese Mafia.

  129. Last time, I heard that Carla Mathers, Viable General Counsel has resigned after FBI raided Viable, Inc.'s HQ. She wasn't able to handle this overwhelmed lawsuits anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  130. She should resign. She did not do her job. General counsel job is to make sure the company is following FCC rules. To make sure administration is following procedures and industry practices. I am sure everyone KNEW that they were doing fraud calls, including general counsel.
I am not an employee of any VRS company and I have never worked with Viable. But I am very involved in the deaf community and interpreting community and I am sick to my stomach that interpreters were put in this terrible situation. My 30 + plus years in this "deaf world" and I have never seen the most unethical arrogant behaviors from deaf and interpreters that I see now. I am very very sick and saddened by what has happened to everyone involved. I am sleepless worrying about interpreters that can't feed their families or pay their bills because they thought they had JOB SECURITY.And the mean postings and the nasty things people are saying about each other. I'm just very sick about it today.

    ReplyDelete
  131. I know one interpreter have 5 children. Viable not pay him 4 weeks. This interpreter can't feed his family, pay bills and now lost his car. Is this how Company #2 (Viable) is good to their employees?? I don't think so. SHAME ON VIABLE! Dirty work!

    ReplyDelete
  132. Believe it or not, John Yeh encourage those illegal activities. All of the Viable's employees were doing run calls during the last two years before stopping in November of 2008 after they shut down Mascom. John Yeh and rest of the Executive Management knew and encouraged the "R" Calls for a long time including the H.R. and rest of the employees at HQ who run the calls all the time.
-It is not that John Yeh is helping other deaf people getting a job with Viable. Let me tell you, This may come as a shock to most of you.
-John Yeh may look like he is so sincere about Deaf and HOH and how much he wanted to help them, give them an opportunity. Real Case Scenario, Viable Executive Management Team and the Ceo's, have flat out told some of the people that the deaf people in general are ignorant and low function and easy target for fast easy money and easily manipulated to do their dirty deeds.
-I can guarantee you that I am not trying to encourage to support certain VRS Companies because myself, I have seldom used Relay Service all of my life, I really don't like to use VRS before Viable.
-When ViableVRS came along, I tried a few times. I did not really think it was an awesome service because some of the interpreters have had a difficult time understanding me. Some of the interpreters are well qualified, but I don't catch them every time I call ViableVRS. So, Therefore, I try to correspond through email, or in different methods. This time, I will never use ViableVRS ever again!
-From my good source inside Viable, after Viable tried to restructure, the Upper Management Team has not been affected. What they did was sold out their Interpreters, Employees, and Reps. to maintain the same Upper Management Team to keep it intact as it was before.
-That's why I am telling you now, Viable have not learned their lesson. They simply don't care because they are going to do the same thing at someone else's expense. That is us, the Deaf and HOH communities. We are paying our taxes and Viable is robbing our Tax Money! They will keep on doing this until they are put in Federal Prison.
-I can guarantee you that most of the money being funneled to overseas, to Yeh's family and relatives' bank accounts to prevent anyone from U.S. to seize the money. Mei Kennedy, Jason yeh, Joseph Yeh, John Yeh, Parker Kennedy, and rest of incumbent people who are involved in this are 100 percent guilty of Fraudulent to the U.S. Government. Period.
-I think many of you who say, Oh it can't be or things like that, Let me tell you straight up, Yes, it is true. They are taking advantage of us and our tax money. Yes, They are doing dirty deeds. They don't care as long as it is someone else's expense.
-Do not use ViableVRS! Poor those Interpreters and Employees! No money, No Insurance, being slaved to work and work thinking they are doing a good cause, when Viable's laughing all the way to the bank, cashing more checks, putting them away and to tell them, Oh I am sorry, The bank and Funders still haven't deposited the money and when they do, it is going to take 48 hours before that happens, before they know it, weekend is up. They tell them Oh, it is coming next Wednesday. Everyone keeps coming in to work then to find out that it is going to be on Friday rather than on Wednesday like they said it would be here. Bunch of B.S. There is no money!
-Stop, Wake up and smell the roses!
-Yes, Carla could not cover Viable's arse anymore, or she could be considered to be an associate to these fraudulent charges. She is smart enough to think about her future and her license as an Attorney. Smart Woman!
-Think of those poor Interpreters! If you do call ViableVRS, look through their eyes, their family, their kids! Stop using ViableVRS! Those Poor Starving Souls! Single moms, Single Dads, families who may lose home, being evicted from Apartment, and forcing them to go on street, Why?, because Viable is GREEDY! Viable won't take care of those who have served Viable so well for long time. Shame!

I would like for everyone to analyze the quote for a moment. You see, I am concerned about what the person posted...It says "WE" don't know that EMPLOYEE don't suffer at all. This obviously came from one of the Viable's employee of sort, Perhaps Executive Team. Now another thing to analyze to how it depict true feeling towards to them...Stop say Poor, Poor- The person obviously can't relate to their employees who suffer, rather than to say, Yes, We are aware of how tough time it is for our employees.

This show us how coldhearted that person is and that's the kind of person who works for Viable, Whoever that is, we may never know, this tells us right there that, this person can't relate to them at all...

Now to the point where this person thinks that EXCLAMATION POINT is not going anywhere for me, I am not here for myself, I am here for every Viable's Former and Current Employees. I am stating the facts. I am not trying to go anywhere but to the point. No Pun Intended.

  141. Well said Maximus, thank you.
Bottom line is, this company is in some big trouble. Throw out innocent until proven guilty, they have hurt many many people in their greed! What is most important and no one is talking about are the interpreters that are suffering right now as I type this. Can all of you imagine your boss owing you 7,000.00 dollars? Can you imagine having no food in your home to feed your children tonight? Maybe some of you think that is nothing, but to the average interpreter it is a nightmare. VRS is very hard work, most of these interpreters worked very hard for their money. Now because of bad decisions from the administration the interpreters are paying the price and no one is fighting for them. Where is RID ? Where is the support team for these traumatized interpreters? NO WHERE! I would like those interpreters out there to know we support them and they all need to come forward and be honest with the FCC about FRAUD CALLS and file lawsuits for your pay you are owed. It is the only way that people will learn to NEVER take advantage of interpreters and their hard working hands. DO NOT walk away quietly and accept what was done to you. Many of us here will support you all the way. Please look at EDSALERT.COM , the FCC is asking interpreters to please come forward. One interpreter can not do it alone. Power is in the numbers. We need all interpreters to come forward that know of fraud calls. We are here to provide a honest hard working service to the deaf community. We OWE it to the community to assist in any way we can to STOP the greedy people out there who THIRST for money off of interpreters hands and off of the deaf people's right's, as american citizen's to have communication. The fight must start now to stop it. Interpreters of America I ask all of you to look at your morals and values and your hard working hands and join the fight to STOP the greed . The only way to start is to stop working for any greedy people. Imagine if every interpreter in America did not show up on Monday to work ,to support our interpreter friends who are suffering right now. Imagine everyone how awful that could be.Please keep them in your thoughts this weekend as you all travel, eat, enjoy your summer ,go to RID and have happy times while your ex co workers are sitting home with NOTHING. This is all very tragic. Not to just a few people, but many many people, deaf and hearing both. Now is the time to join together, deaf and hearing, honest and brave, and clean this up. No more greed off of our hands!

  144. I don't think that Viable is the only company that is doing questionable things. Second hand sources tell me that Purple has contracted with a telemarketing company called DataStar LLP in Largo, FL to hire deaf people as telemarketers so that they can make calls through Purple VRS and rake in a lot of minutes for them. I hope that authorities will investigate this as the CEO of DataStar, Vance Vogel has been implicated in a number of illegal business schemes in the base. Something to think about-

    Frederick- ?
    Baltimore-?
    Towson- Shut Down
Tampa-Viable owned- Shut down after one month in business.

Corona, California- Sister Call Center- Severed ties

Houston, TX.- Sister Call Center, not sure if its still operating.

Austin, TX.- Parker Kennedy (Mei Kennedy's Husband)

Director of all Interpreters- Alan Abarbanell (Resigned)

Yes, you are right, all Chinese people did make run calls to Mascom and Viable all day long and all night long through the graveyard shift! Those were Yeh's families and friends.

Those people did know about these calls and ENCOURAGED by John Yeh.

Viable's and its Executives, Managers, P.O.C's excuses when being questioned by several Interpreters, were "Show me where did it say in the FCC's Policy that Run Calls aren't allowed?" They found a ways to shut the Interpreters up. This is the reason why the Interpreters did not act because they had nothing to back it up.

You are right. The Interpreters are starving and can't go anywhere, to RID Convention, or to Family Outings, even pay their bills. Some of them are on the brink of being homeless. We don't see Viable to try make an emergency loan to cover the payroll, at least two weeks's pay to help them stay afloat. Now with Maryland's statue. 2 million dollars payroll becomes 6 million of dollars if everyone filed with the court. I wonder how they are going to stay afloat now.

  146. This is about Viable and that is the focus in this blog. VPad's, Interpreters, Employees and Reps. We are not here about Purple, or DatatStar. If the FBI investigated them, so be it. Viable has done numerous illegal activities within the company and paying sub contractors outside Viable's Sphere to call and use Viable's VRS and soliciting other business without complying the Do Not Call List. That is against FCC rules!

  147. Interesting that Corporate counsel and Director of Interpreters resigned. i don't know about the Corp. counsel but I think the Director of Interpreters KNEW about the run calls. He should be charged with fraud too.

Many people who don't want to see the truth on this blog are not thinking clearly.

Ask yourself how a hearing-owned call center in TX and FLA could receive VRS calls from China. Viable HAD to be the company who started the run minutes. VIABLE ROUTED the calls to TX and FLA otherwise TX and FLA could not get the calls from China. This definetly was a scheme.

Thank you Maximus for helping bring the truth forward....bless you!!

  150. Yes, you are right. The calls were routed to Mascom and Florida, to other call centers as well. Viable is next to go down. It is like a domino's effect.

How they operate, by using VCS system. Viable routes certain callers with IP-address or VSN to certain call centers. That's how Mascom got all "China" Callers.

I have to agree that some of people are in major denials. Some of them think that they can LIE to FBI or FCC and get away with it.

They are forgetting something. Someone, somewhere is getting tired of Viable taking advantage of our Deaf and HOH communities.

Someone's gotta blow the whistle eventually. VI1, VI2, and so on did their part. It is time for someone who is deaf like myself to come forward, this is just a beginning of an end, and perhaps more will follow.

It is my job, as a citizen, to bring this forward, not for myself, but for my fellow Deaf and HOH citizens. Our Interpreters in communities. That's what we should do. Communities stick together. United We stand, Divide We fall!

Think of those people who are in much needed of Hope and Light to guide them through the hard times. Pray for them, Support them, and think about them.

Don't worry about working for Viable, I am sure once communities know about this, they will embrace you back and give y'all another chance to work somewhere else. Viable's not the only VRS Company nor Interpreting work. Sometimes money is not everything. Be Humble, maybe you can learn something from it and cherish for what life's values are.

  152. I read above. I wonder if Deaf Chinese callers got paid by using VRS minutes? If so, how they get paid? By sending overseas snailmail? If so, that means MASCOM site was responsible to send paychecks or money orders to China, huh. Hmm, how the Viable's secret system works for sending out to China?

I want to stop everyone blaming on Viable. Not an only Viable which is in hot water. What about others? HOVRS and other VRS providers, too, as I believe that Deaf employees in VRS industry like HOVRS using many running calls. HOVRS company is owned by a hearie. Purple terps are fine to work with. They won't complain or apply to but only way to talk with CEO or upper executives. They can deal with terps by voice - not sign language. They can solve the problems quickly. It seems easily.

Obviously, all of them have to use "Mask" as their hidden secret.

For Viable, all executives and upper managements are all Deaf. That is why terps are struck with them and couldn't talk with Deaf. So they applied to FCC as they complained about Deaf callers were using VRS run calls. More terps applied and applied to FCC. It sounds it leaked out from a hole. It became big and bigger and it showed the opening to the public. It is sad.

For former Viable terps were supposed not to tale to FCC. Too late now. Right now, hurting/messing on-site and off-site Viable employees and current terps, all of them still wait for getting great paychecks. They may be bum or homeless for a while.

Please Please try to unite Deaf employees and terps together in the near future as soon as possible. '\m/

Actually, I will admit that I do enjoy blogging. I have never blog before in my life until this one. It is therapeutic for me to know that I am helping other victims when you are doing is defending the evil ones.

Eat my dust, You aren't even close to my proximity, you are amateur. Get lost in the real world.

Don't mess with the best cause the best don't mess or you'll vanquish like the rest!

  171. I have thought about this and I really felt for you, so I thought since you may not know any better but I still need to do my job as a person. Since you are also a victim as well of your own demeanor.

Since it sounds like you spoke from your own experience, so I took the opportunity to research for you, because you are right it is sad to hear that you spend so much time all day and blowing the hours away.

You could check out the Blogging Addiction Rehabs on Google.com and there is also a course on Time Management. Maybe you can learn more from them. There is a meeting for people like you. I hope this helps you to overcome your own addiction and bad time management. WINK

  173. I just went to Rockville to do some shopping. I had to check Viable, Inc.'s HQ. Can y'all guess what I just saw? Parking lot is EMPTY at noon. Quite a tragic. 24/7 service? Where? Secret call center located somewhere?

  174. " Maximus" sounds like a super hero character in an age 6 to 7 cartoon show. Lol

    ReplyDelete
  175. Viable is dying. Diable. :)

Seriously, how many of you used to work for Viable and no longer do after all this went down? They closed a call center in PA, several in MD, i'm not sure about the others, but I *am* seeing ex viable employees looking for jobs elsewhere.

What sickens me the most is this - there ARE people that worked for Viable and yet have nothing to do with any if this. There's the VI's, there are the callers that called in to run minutes, or to perform some so-called "stress testing". there are also the programmers, the ones that are paid to write code for the software.. yet they get the shaft. What saddens me even more is the OWNER of company 2 has yet to step up and do anything to help those who were royally screwed. John Yeh IS aware of all that goes on. The way the company is being run is just plain shady. Hiring people over personal preference instead of technical skills or interpreting skills. Oh wait, let me guess....if you're not a Kappa Gamma member, your chances of landing a job at Diable are sllim to none. actually, you won't be getting one there anytime soon.

Viable, just do the deaf community a BIG favor... SHUT DOWN. Your business antics are a sore black eye for the deaf community. Those of you who think John Yeh has done so much for the deaf community by doanating money....think again. WHERE DID THAT MONEY COME FROM? that's right.. STOLEN from the government. stolen from the tax payers. stolen from YOUR paychecks. Is this the kind of company you want to support?

    I sure hope not.

  176. Is that all you've got? If you had done your homework, it is not some kind of a cartoon character. I used that name for a purpose. It has much greater purpose. Let me give you a clue.

    "Merciful"

If you are able to hint on that answer, you would be shitting your pants again. lol...

Like I said you are a friggin' amateur! I guess you still watch cartoons. Living with your parents, by any chance? LMAO

  179. Enough of this personal bashing! So immature, come on, grow up. If you're going to keep blasting each other personally here, then take it elsewhere!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  180. You started being immature and blasting everyone. Hearing took advantages, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! Interpeters have NO rights to complain anything against Deaf! Ok? Ed Blossom is the father of backstabbing and Deaf Crab Theory. He is surely happy to hear more interpreters doing this way to Viable and Deaf Nation Expo. He is a vulture waiting for them to die and take advantage for his own business www.convorelay.com/convo

Look at this website. No diversity. All white trash! the Racist group.

He is loser and coward. He is Racist.

It's time to kick their ass out now. Stop traitors! racists! Even interpreters are racists!

I am not trying to be a messiah, I am trying to help bring down the Empire. I am trying to help bring down the Goliath. I am trying to help Deaf Americans see the truth. I am trying to help all Viable's Interpreters, Former and Current. Cause what John Yeh and rest of you who have done wrong things were illegal!

Yes, I will be the first one to admit that I can be a total ASS when it comes down to a Giant Corporation screwing over the Deaf people and Interpreters! I can be a hardball and I will not stop until Viable pays up!

I am bringing out y'all bashers true colors. Who's angry, now? I am enjoying this. If you want to bash me, that's fine. If you think Maximus is not cool, that's fine with me. I picked that name for a reason, and nobody can tell me what the hell to do or to say. This is America! I am not here for the popular contest, I am here for one reason, To bring down Viable! I am not trying to make friends on the way in the process! Kiss my ass!

I am going to rest my case, Like I said Y'all bashers are amateurs! Yawn!!!

By the way, since some of the bashers seem can't read between the lines.

I am deaf with large deaf family. My wife used to work as Interpreter for Viable.

Viable owes us $12,000.00 for a month of July alone!

When I was working there for over a year, I collected all the information and copies of anything I could lay my hands on to indict Viable!

    Read 'em and Weep!

What does Deafpower has anything to do with it! PSH!

  183. Don't get off on tangent people. It is important to stay focused on what this is about, and that is the fraud done by Viable. Keep the personal anger to yourself, or start a separate blog to bash. It has no use here, except to attempt to divert attention away from the true issue...FRAUD! Not all harmed employees were terps. Let's also remember that. ALL employees, both deaf and hearing, have been harmed, and none have been paid since July 3!! They also lost health insurance, without being told! And now, they say they cannot provide COBRA coverage as REQUIRED BY LAW!!!

    Stay focused, people!

  184. Wow.. I never thought how immature and idiotic this is... I personally have 3 VPAD's and I love it... I have no personal issue against ZVRS, Sorenson, Viable, etc... Competition is competition. I still have Sorenson VP but I'm using VPAD more often. Easy to move around and I have NO TECHNICAL PROBLEM with it. Apparently, you are impatient with this. So many of you are really psycho!!!! Get a life, GUYS!!!

    ReplyDelete
  185. Shoot you! Right they are psycho!!

VPAD is the BEST! Viable is the BEST and only one real deaf-owned business. We can't afford to lose that one.

Two-faced Deaf and Terps cares about their pockets, not to deaf community. They deserved to lose their jobs. They are parasites not valuable to any deaf community or deaf industries. They are all worthless. They don't understand the business issues in real world. Especially this economic crisis. Look at others, millions of unemployed people! Then complaining at small deaf-owned Viable and its our precious for the future.

No way. We stand for Viable all the time. FCC will realize that they did overact! and mistakes!

    They are LOSERS!

    ReplyDelete
  186. 1:27 PM,

It's not entirely true. Viable, Inc. has indeed crossed the line. They have been warned by FCC. Viable, Inc. opted to continue to perform unethical and illegal actions. They took the money from taxpayers. They made a big mistake and it is inevitable for them to get away. Let the justice be served.

  187. PART 1: I was an employee at Viable and gave them almost 3 good years of loyal service. I was in no way in lower, middle, or upper management. I was just one of the everyday peons that showed up to do my job. I’m not going to divulge any proprietary information in this blog, so I’m not afraid to share my identity. My name is Gregg.

At the very beginning, I felt very proud to belong to this new and growing Deaf-owned, Deaf-operated business, even encouraging my friends and loved ones to come be a part of the “Viable Family”. I looked forward to going to work every day, being part of an energetic dynamic of Deaf working alongside Hearing, shoulder to shoulder, providing a service to the Community. Yay!

I never suspected that, 3 short years later, I would deeply regret having ever worked there, or brought other people to work there. I feel profoundly sad and hugely ashamed of the owners of the company, who have individually and collectively caused so much pain for so many people. This pain is prolonged, and will continue for years to come, with many unknown ramifications.

I must pause here to say that I am alarmed by previous blog comments calling attention to the owner’s ethnicity. Where he may have been born bears no consequence to business actions that have been taken, and I must voice my distaste for bigoted and discriminatory comments referring to country of origin, what language someone uses, or what their ethnicity may be. We all, in every sense, are a minority of some kind. If you are Deaf, or a woman, or a person of color, or a member of a different religion, or a member of the GLBT community, or a user of a different language from most people around you, you are a member of a minority. The business decisions being discussed here are not based upon any of those criteria, and I think it is low to even mention them when you are voicing complaints about business practices. Focus.

I know there are a lot of issues being discussed in this blog, a good percentage of which I sense are misinformation, guesses, and rumors based on half truths. There is logic in what a lot of you are saying, though, and I respect the intensity of emotion that everyone is feeling, because I feel it, too. We all are victims, employees and consumers alike. And I will be the first to understand why no one knows the truth, because very little communication is going on between those “who know” and those “who deserve to know”.

    ReplyDelete
  188. PART 2: I am not a technician or an engineer, and I was not present during any event where products were sold, so I can’t comment on whether Viable knowingly (and proudly) sold shoddy merchandise in an attempt to dupe an unwary Deaf public, as some of your comments suggest.

I also can’t comment on the issue of fraudulent calls. That is for the FBI to decide according to the tenets of the law. It would only be within a legal setting that I would feel compelled to share what I may or may not know about such things. Certainly a blog forum is not that kind of a setting. And I have enough faith in the legal institutions of this country to do what is right.

What I am here to comment on is the fact that well over 500 people and their loved ones have been hurt (and are still being hurt) by Viable’s doings, most recently and most importantly by the fact that no employees have been paid in more than one month, even though a good number of people are still loyally showing up to work. To date, more than 100 people have lost their jobs, with no warning. It was announced at the end of July that insurance (and perhaps Cobra) premiums had not been paid due to the company’s negligence. This was a deep shock to all of us “lower” employees, regardless of our hearing status. Please understand that every person is an individual, each of us with our own life experiences and financial situations. There are certainly people better off than I am, and I know for a fact there are others in a worse situation than I am in. I, myself, provide insurance and support for 2 beautiful children, so it was a shocking blow to find out that a company I had given so much of myself to in 3 years had symbolically spit in my face by not following basic business protocol.

I quit my job at Viable on July 13th, and to date have not received any pay (for wages or vacation) due to me, nor have I received Cobra information regarding extension of my insurance. Anybody who knows anything about business, knows that “simple” fact, in itself, is against the law. No one has been told when they will be paid…promises fly out like smoke on a swift wind, saying …”Soon, soon”….but promises don’t pay rent, or medical bills, or put food in a small child’s mouth. People are very scared, people are depressed, people are terrified of the unknown future. These are human lives we are talking about. People are losing their ability and will to survive, and it is time for action.

Justice and the Law will take care of the other issues listed above. But I appeal to you, now, our esteemed Community of Deaf and Hearing people, reach deep down into your hearts immediately. Do not delay. Step forward and say: Enough! If we are not being taken care of by our employer, or your VRS provider, then we need to take care of each other. Reach out your hands and help all these people find jobs, offer them a lunch or a coffee. Remind them that they have friends who will help them through these times. Offer to babysit their kids so they can go job hunting. If you have an extra bedroom, there’s probably somebody who needs it because they can’t pay their rent this month. Give someone a ride to their interview. Send them a list of contact people who can help them. Buy them a $10 Metro Smart Card so they can get to places they need to go. Offer them a smile, instead of a misdirected frown. Your anger and mistrust is not for the everyday workers. Help them. You never know when you may need similar help one day for yourself and your family. It is in times of great adversity that we prove our humanity to each other.

  189. Hey Viable employees! We understand that you have to defend your employer. I was told that everyone has not get paid yet, Viable made the money and not paying you. Shame. Which I thought its a little awkward to see that kind of behavior. I guess you have no where to go because your resume may not take you to anywhere but Viable.

Guess you are stuck with the ship that is sinking. Get on a lifeboat. Save yourself! Save yourself! Save yourself!

    ReplyDelete
  190. We are not Viable employees. We are clients. Simple. Escape from your companys suffering time and save yourself by using lawyer to sue them for more pockets but the truth. Your lawyer will end up your pockets and no money left for you.

Stop sitting and whinning to this blog. Cheap! Go home and find another job. Interpreters are spoiled brats! $45 per hour. Stupid brats! Unfair to deafies.

Sorry for deaf people who lost jobs. But their loyal?? liability? asset? It depends. No mercy on interpreters! They are consuming money from deaf community. ;-)

  191. 2:36 PM,

Yes, that's true. Viable, Inc.'s currently messages are like they are saying that their ship has a double hull (like captain mentioned it on Titanic) which the ship wont sink in order to contribution to the level of employee's confident.

  194. A message for Gregg: I must applaud for your brave movement to come forward and express your concerns toward the employer. I highly advise all the employees and ex-employees from Viable, Inc. to please contact Department of Labor, Wage Department and IRS and file the complain that Viable, Inc. is definitely not following the law. To my understanding, the attorney who represented Viable, resigned from Viable, Inc. Viable is sadly in deep trouble. I am a Representative for Viable and they owe me over $2500.00 since June. They did not do correctly on form 1099. They've enclosed the hotel, mileage, miscellaneous expenses in 1099 and that is clearly a violation. Sadly, I'm in the processing of filing complaints against Viable, Inc. How can Viable not think they would get in trouble with the government!!! DON'T MESS WITH THE GOVERNMENT!!! Truthfully, I enjoyed working for Viable but they can't be trusted. They can't take care of their employees and Representatives. One thing I must add, God is watching over us. God IS taking care of this problem. God is IN CONTROL!!! God bless!!!

One of the best i've read on this board that doesnt try to insult anyone or bad mouth anyone.. what you've posted is very well written from the heart. i wish the best for you. I've already tried to help those who are still working at Viable and those people know where to find me if they should decide to embark on a journey that will lead them to a new job.
